Lukashenko against Sargsyan: who will become the next CSTO Secretary General?

On December 21 Moscow will host the session of the Collective Security Council of the CSTO. During the meeting the heads of the member states will approve the candidacy of the new Secretary General of the organization.

Today the CSTO is led by Nikolay Bordyuzha. The rotation of the post of Secretary General takes priority in line with the Russian alphabet. Thus, Armenia is one of the major candidates, whose representative can take the post of Secretary General of the CSTO.

The result of decisions on the appointment of a new Secretary General may come as a surprise, because the President of Belarus has his own plans for the post of Secretary General of the CSTO, — says Alexander Krylov, President of the Academic Society of Caucasian Studies.

«Despite Lukashenko’s desire to see the representative of Belarus as the next Secretary General, the letter A in the alphabet stands in front of the letter B, and the position of the queue should go to Armenia», — told RUSARMINFO Alexander Krylov.

Whoever is confirmed as the CSTO Secretary General, he will not make a radical change in the policy of the organization, — assures Konstantin Tasits, Senior researcher at the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies.

«The CSTO is a union of equal members. The Secretary-General is the first among equals. Russia, as the largest representative of the organization has never imposed its will on the rest of the members, and other participants hardly will to do that, «- told RUSARMINFO Konstantin Tasits.

Note: Armenia is one of the founders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Yerevan signed the Collective Security Treaty (CST) on May 15, 1992 in Tashkent. Since 2003, Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, created on the basis of the Collective Security Treaty. The organization consists of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
