Victor Nadein-Raevsky: «Erdogan threatens to repeat the Armenian Genocide in modern Turkey»

«Armenia is playing with fire: in Turkey there are nearly 100 thousand Armenians, and about 50 thousand of them are not citizens of Turkey,» quotes a passage from the speech of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the Azeri news portal oxu.az. These words were uttered by Erdogan in response to the statement of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan that “Armenia is ready for war with Azerbaijan”.

The statement of Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a clear provocative threat to the Armenian population of Turkey, — says Victor Nadein-Raevsky, historian, senior researcher at Institute of world economy and international relations, the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“The President of Turkey wanted to remind about the events of 1915, warning that they could be repeated. His appeal to Armenia has the following meaning: if something goes wrong, then your countrymen are at stake,” told RUSARMINFO Victor Nadein-Raevsky.

According to the historian, notwithstanding the fact that the Turkish government denies the Armenian Genocide, it remembers about those massacres whenever it’s convenient, threatening by a repetition of those monstrous events.

“It’s a physical threat to the Armenians, that is an open threat of Genocide in the modern Turkey. The Armenian leadership should respond to this statement by showing the world that the threat of destruction of innocent people is in the traditions of Turkish politics,” said Viktor Nadein-Raevsky.

In 1914, the Ottoman Empire had a population of approximately 13 million people, of which between 2.1 and 4 million were Armenians (from 16% to 31% of Turkey’s population). In 1918, after the implementation of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, there were no more than 150 thousand Armenians.
