At today’s briefing with journalists, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to the RUSARMINFO correspondent’s question about Russia’s attitude toward the escalation of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, presented the official position of the Foreign Ministry:
«Russia has a positive attitude to the promotion of political dialogue at the highest level, which is aimed at solving the problem exclusively by peaceful, political and diplomatic means,» — said Maria Zakharova, commenting on the last meeting in Bern between the President of Armenia and his Azerbaijani counterpart.
The Foreign Ministry representative stated that a breakthrough in resolving the issue wasn’t reached as a result of the meeting of the Presidents. However, according to her, the Presidents had the opportunity to communicate directly, face to face, and to discuss the proposals laid on the negotiation table, clarifying their positions on controversial issues.
«We believe that the mediation activities of the co-chairs within the OSCE Minsk Group will continue. In addition, Russia will make its own efforts to help the parties to reach a compromise on the basis of the approaches agreed between the co-chairs,” concluded Maria Zakharova.
Note: On December 19, in the Swiss city of Bern for the first time this year took place the meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The parties again tried to find a resolution of the Karabakh issue. With the submission of the Armenian side, the issue of the use of heavy equipment and large-caliber weapons by Azerbaijan was discussed. Despite this, during and after the meeting of the presidents, the Azerbaijani army continued shelling the positions of the Defense Army of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
