Azhdar Kurtov: Russia is not interested in Azerbaijan as a transit corridor

«Russia is in search of ways to Syria through Karabakh,» the article with such a headline is published today by Deutsche Welle. The purpose of the publication is to claim that Russia desperately needs the territory and airspace of Azerbaijan, which guarantees a transit corridor to Syria. The Kremlin tries as much as possible to use the quarrel between Azerbaijan and the EU, hoping for the return of Baku within its orbit of influence, writes the German edition. But Deutsche Welle’s wrong,- says Azhdar Kurov, the chief editor of the RISS journal «National strategy Issues».

«It is illogical to talk about the transit to Syria through Azerbaijan. Russia can fly to Syria over the Caspian sea, bypassing the territory of Azerbaijan. Though in 1995 Azerbaijan stated that all airspace of the Caspian sea belonged to this country, the other Caspian States do not recognize this and may use the airspace for their goals,» in his interview to RUASRMINFO has mentioned the expert.

A day before, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Moscow was sending to Syria military helicopters and aircraft, increasing its military aid to Syria. In this regard, Western analysts are trying to predict the possible transit corridors, in which Moscow may carry out the transfer of military equipment to Syria.
